Intro to Fly Fishing Class
November 18, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 9:00 am on Saturday, repeating until December 9, 2023
Intro to Fly Fishing is a four-hour class that covers the basics: equipment and tackle, terminology, knot tying, and fundamental fly casting. The class is split into a classroom session here at the shop and a casting lesson at a local park by the Deschutes River. This class is appropriate for anyone or any age, realistically. Everything is provided. Just show up, learn, and have fun.
The Classroom Session
The classroom session typically spans 1.5 – 2 hours depending on group size*. We’ll go over the essential equipment and tackle you’ll need, basic terms and nomenclature, and the first knots you’ll need to learn. There will be time for Q and A’s, and each student will take home a reference sheet of what we cover, so you won’t have to memorize anything.
After the classroom session we’ll caravan to a local park for a casting lesson.
The Casting Lesson
The casting lesson usually lasts 1.5 – 2 hours. Fly rods are provided if you need one. We’ll cover the fundamentals of good fly casting and help you build good casting habits. The casting lesson will be conducted on the grass. We use small bits of yarn for practice casting so nobody gets any new piercings.
Our Goal
Our goal is that you, upon completing the class, have a good understanding of the tackle and equipment is involved, common fly fishing terminology, basic knot tying, and how the rod and fly line work together in casting. Furthermore, you’ll be able to more easily digest what you read and discover on your own moving forward.
